Manuscript Assessment
Middle Grade and Young Adult Fiction

Pre-assessment:
This is to give you a taste of what I offer as well as the opportunity to improve the
manuscript yourself before investing further.

To receive a pre-assessment, send me the first 3000 words of your work plus a
synopsis. In your cover letter, please supply the word count of the full manuscript
and include any specific concerns you might have about your work. The charge for
pre-assessment is $100.00. This must be paid at time of submission.

The pre-assessment will provide you with:
•         A concise report outlining the strengths and weaknesses of your submission
including suggestions for improvement in the areas of plot, characterization,
presentation, general interest, writing techniques, structure, point of view, style
and overall tone.

•        An extensive proofread and line edit on one full page of your manuscript.
This should help you to edit the work yourself before resubmitting and can tighten
your writing while decreasing the manuscript word count.

Based on findings in the pre-assessment, I will recommend what I believe is the
best course of action for you. Probably one of the following:

•
      Full Edit.
You will receive:
o   a line-by-line edit focusing on grammar, punctuation and spelling. This takes
the form of comments, tips and suggested changes inserted throughout your text.
o   a detailed report outlining the strengths and weakness of your work focusing
on plot, characterization, presentation, structure, viewpoint, style and overall tone.
•
    Assessment
You will receive
o   a detailed report outlining the strengths and weakness of your work focusing
on plot, characterization, presentation, structure, viewpoint, style and overall tone.
This report will also guide you toward ensuring that your manuscript fulfils your
specific goals. This report is not intended as an official recommendation but as a
tool for you to use to improve your work.
•         Mentoring
This will be more like a one-to-one tutor / student relationship using one specific
piece of work and will be charged at an hourly rate.  If we both decide this is the
best way to proceed, we will work out an individual agreement that outlines our
course of action and is best suited to your requirements.

Note: Writing for publication necessitates accepting honest criticism and well-
informed advice on your work. I will be professional and honest with you – always.
After your pre-assessment, if I feel that you need to do more basic study before
embarking on a full manuscript, I will send you a list of your weaknesses and some
applicable but general writing tips. This may include a suggestion to take up a
writing course or complete some additional study.

Each writer is unique. Each of you will have different requirements. Once we have
agreed on the best course of action, I will offer you a quote based on an estimation
of the time it will take for me to provide the service you require.
